This document contains important safety and operating instructions.
Please read these instructions carefully and save them for future
reference.
Before using the battery charger, read all the instructions and
cautionary markings on (1) the charger, (2) the battery, and (3) the
radio using the battery.
1. To reduce risk of injury, charge only the rechargeable
Motorola authorized batteries listed in Table 4. Other
batteries may explode, causing personal injury and
damage.
2. Use of accessories not recommended by Motorola may result in
risk of fire, electric shock, or injury.
3. To reduce risk of damage to the electric plug and cord, pull by the
plug rather than the cord when disconnecting the charger.
4. An extension cord should not be used unless absolutely necessary.
Use of an improper extension cord could result in risk of fire and
electric shock. If an extension cord must be used, make sure that
the cord size is 18AWG for lengths of up to 100 feet (30.48m), and
16AWG for lengths up to 150 feet (45.72m).
5. To reduce risk of fire, electric shock, or injury, do not operate the
charger if it has been broken or damaged in any way.

6. Do not disassemble the charger – it is not repairable
and replacement parts are not available. Disassembly
of the charger may result in risk of electric shock or fire.
7. To reduce risk of electric shock, unplug the charger from
the AC outlet before cleaning.
OPERATIONAL SAFETY GUIDELINES
This equipment is not suitable for outdoor use. Use only in dry
locations/conditions.
Use only with Motorola Authorized power supplies listed in Table 3.
Disconnect from line voltage by removing the main plug from the
outlet.
The socket outlet to which this equipment is connected should be
close and easily accessible.
Maximum ambient temperature around the charger must not exceed
50°C (122°F).
Make sure the cord is located where it will not be stepped on, tripped
over, or subjected to water, damage, or stress.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The IMPRES Adaptive Charger System is a fully automated battery
care system. All a user needs to do is follow these simple steps:
1. Place the radio/IMPRES battery into the charger. Turn the radio Off
when placed in the charger.
2. The radio/IMPRES battery may be removed from the charger when
the LED turns steady GREEN.
The charger’s pocket accommodates either a radio with an IMPRES
battery attached or an IMPRES battery alone. Batteries charge best at
room temperature 25°C +/- 5°C (77°F +/- 9°F).
Charging Procedure
1. Plug the power supply charger plug into the power receptacle
located at the back of the charger.
2. Plug the power supply AC plug into the appropriate AC outlet. A
successful power-up sequence results in a SINGLE GREEN
BLINK on each pocket charger indicator.
3. Insert an IMPRES battery, or a radio with an IMPRES battery, into
the charger’s pocket :
a. Align battery contacts with the charger contacts.
b. Press the battery into the pocket, ensuring complete contact
between charger and battery contacts.
4. To remove a radio or IMPRES battery from the charger, pull straight
up until the battery completely clears the charger housing.

Once the IMPRES battery is properly seated into the pocket, the
charger indicator illuminates, indicating the charger has recognized the
presence of the battery. Refer to the charging indicators in Table 1.

(Either the battery voltage is too low or the battery
temperature is too low or too high to allow charging.
When this condition is corrected, the charger will
automatically begin charging.)
Blinking Red Battery is unchargeable or not making proper contact.
Steady Orange (This feature applies to IMPRES batteries only)
Charger is in the discharge mode of Reconditioning/
Calibration. The length of time the charger is in
Reconditioning/Calibration depends upon the state of
charge remaining in the battery when inserted. (Fully-
charged batteries require more time to discharge – 8 to
12 hours or more – than fully-discharged batteries).
Blinking Red/Green (This feature applies to IMPRES batteries only)
Battery has completed charging and is fully charged.
Battery continues to be usable and receives all IMPRES
benefits including usage tracking and automatic
Reconditioning/Calibration, but may be nearing the end
of its rated service life.

INITIALIZATION
In order for the features of Motorola IMPRES batteries and the
Adaptive Charging System to be fully available, the data contained in
Motorola IMPRES batteries must be initialized by the charger. The
charger will attempt to Initialize the battery the first time the battery is
charged. Initialization is an automatic process. The Initialization
process is successful when Reconditioning/Calibration is completed.
The Reconditioning/Calibration sequence is as follows: battery is fully
Discharged, then Rapid Charged, followed by Trickle Charge, and
ends with Charge Complete. On the charge indicator, Discharge is
indicated by a STEADY ORANGE light, Rapid Charge is indicated by a
STEADY RED light, Trickle Charge is indicated by a BLINKING
GREEN light, and Charge Complete is indicated by a STEADY
GREEN light. The Reconditioning/Calibration process requires time,
so the battery should be left in the charger for approximately 12 hours
or more to complete the process. Do not remove the battery from the
charger until the STEADY GREEN light is on.
AUTOMATIC RECONDITIONING/CALIBRATION
The Motorola IMPRES Adaptive Charger, when used in conjunction
with a Motorola IMPRES battery, has the ability to determine when it is
appropriate to Recondition/Calibrate the battery (see IMPRES Feature/
Benefit Description section for complete list of IMPRES benefits).
When an IMPRES battery is properly inserted into the charger, the
charger determines if it is appropriate to Recondition/Calibrate the
Blinking Orange/Green (This feature applies to IMPRES batteries only)
Battery has completed charging and is fully charged.
Reconditioning/Calibration function is currently disabled
by the user for this pocket and battery requires
Reconditioning/Calibration. It is suggested to enable the
Reconditioning/Calibration feature as soon as possible
to allow the charger to Recondition/Calibrate the battery
on the next charging cycle.

battery. If the battery needs Reconditioning/Calibration, the charger
automatically indicates a STEADY ORANGE. This process may take
up to 12 hours or more to complete, depending upon the state of
charge and capacity rating of the battery when it is inserted. The
Reconditioning/Calibration sequence is as follows: battery is fully
Discharged, then Rapid Charged, followed by Trickle Charge, and
ends with Charge Complete. On the charge indicator, Discharge is
indicated by a STEADY ORANGE light, Rapid Charge is indicated by a
STEADY RED light, Trickle Charge is indicated by a BLINKING
GREEN light, and Charge Complete is indicated by a STEADY
GREEN light.
It is important to note, for this process to be successful, the IMPRES
battery must be allowed to complete the Reconditioning/Recalibration
process. Leave the battery in the charger until the charger indicates a
STEADY GREEN.
Disabling Automatic Reconditioning/Calibration Process
The user may disable the automatic Reconditioning/Calibration
function by changing the position of the Reconditioning Switch to the
“OFF” position before inserting the battery into the pocket. An On/Off
switch for each charging pocket is located at the bottom of the charger.
When the Reconditioning Switch is in the “OFF” position and if the
battery needs Reconditioning/Calibration, then the charger indicator
will show a BLINKING ORANGE/GREEN, FOLLOWED BY STEADY
RED indication upon insertion. When Charging is complete, the
charger indicator will show a Blinking ORANGE/GREEN to alert the
user that the Reconditioning /Calibration feature is disabled and that
the battery requires Reconditioning/ Calibration to optimize
performance. It is suggested to enable the Reconditioning/Calibration
feature as soon as possible to allow the charger to Recondition/
Calibrate the battery on the next charging cycle.
Manually Terminating the Reconditioning/Calibration Process
At any time during the discharge portion of the Reconditioning/
Calibration process of a Motorola IMPRES battery (STEADY
ORANGE indication), Reconditioning/Calibration may be terminated by
removing and reinserting the battery back into the charger within 5

seconds. This causes the charger to terminate the Reconditioning/
Calibration process and begin the charging process. The charger
indicator changes to a STEADY RED. The charger will attempt to
Recondition/Calibrate the battery at the next battery insertion.
Manually Initiating the Reconditioning/Calibration Process
Within 2-1/2 minutes of the initial insertion of an IMPRES battery
(STEADY RED indication), remove and reinsert the battery within
5 seconds to manually force Reconditioning/Calibration to occur. The
charger indicator changes from a STEADY RED to a STEADY
ORANGE. This forces the charger to Recondition/Calibrate and
automatically recharge the battery. This is a useful feature to have
when IMPRES batteries have been in storage for several months or
longer. Several manual Recondition/Calibrate cycles may be required
to rejuvenate the batteries, due to long term storage conditions.
USB Programming Port
This charger is equiped with a USB programming port. If Motorola has
future software releases for this product, the USB port should be used
for this reprogramming function. Refer to the MOL website for
instructions on future programming upgrades.
TROUBLESHOOTING
The IMPRES Adaptive Charger incorporates the features of:
A universal input power supply
A constant current rapid charger
A negative pulse conditioning charger
A Reconditioning/Calibration unit
Do not use this port to power other devices or
for any other functions.

The combination of the features listed above are unique in a desktop
charger. Therefore, operation of the radio with a battery attached while
in the charger is not recommended.
During the charging process, radio operation may result in minimally
reduced radio performance and extended battery charge time.
During the Reconditioning/Calibration process, the battery becomes
fully discharged. As a result, the radio may shut down during
Reconditioning/Calibration mode.
When troubleshooting, always observe the color of the LED.

IMPRES FEATURE / BENEFIT DESCRIPTION
The IMPRES energy solution is a unique patented system approach
that is an advanced Tri-Chemistry energy system developed by
Motorola which encompasses (a) IMPRES batteries, (b) IMPRES
Chargers and, (c) a means by which IMPRES-compatible devices
communicate with each other. IMPRES batteries include a high
accuracy fuel gauge, enabling users to monitor their energy
consumption.
IMPRES Chargers, when used in conjunction with Motorola
IMPRES batteries, will:
1. Automatically recalibrate the IMPRES battery fuel gauge
(NiCd, NiMH, Li-ion).
Motorola’s industry-exclusive IMPRES technology allows

chip in the battery stores all usage information, which is accessed
and evaluated by any IMPRES charger. This information enables
automated battery Reconditioning/Calibration and enables display
of critical charging information. Critical charging information
includes:
• Battery capacity (in mAh and percent of Rated Capacity)
• Voltage while charging and at completion of charge
• Time remaining to complete rapid charging (NiCd
and NiMH only)
• Current battery charge status
• The battery’s unique serial number, part number and
chemistry
2. Maximize battery life by significantly reducing heat during the trickle
and post-charge cycles, while maintaining maximum charge, for
Nickel batteries. Overheating during long-term charging can
damage a battery and result in lost capacity. Most conventional
chargers have a maintenance charge mode at the completion of a
charge cycle that applies constant power to a battery in an effort to
keep it charged over time. This maintenance charge can cause
batteries to overheat.
IMPRES chargers automatically turn off at the end of a charge
cycle, yet continue to electronically monitor IMPRES batteries
every five minutes to determine when more energy should be
applied. This ensures the battery has a high state of charge without
sustaining any heat damage.
IMPRES batteries can be left in IMPRES chargers for extended
periods without heat damage. The charger monitors the batteries
so that they’re charged and ready to go whenever you need them.
3. Eliminate the need to purchase reconditioning equipment and train
personnel to “manage battery maintenance tasks.”
With IMPRES adaptive reconditioning, Motorola has made it easy
and automatic for you to maintain your battery inventory.

IMPRES chargers evaluate the actual usage pattern of every
battery to establish the optimal reconditioning interval.
Adaptive reconditioning makes it easy for battery maintenance
technicians to know the correct reconditioning intervals.
Unwarranted reconditioning cycles wastes battery cycles. Not
reconditioning often enough robs the user from being able to use
the full Potential Capacity of the battery.
4. Maximize operation time between charge cycles by automatically
minimizing memory effect in Nickel batteries.
Motorola’s IMPRES chargers evaluate the actual usage pattern of
each IMPRES battery. This allows the charger to adapt to that
individual battery’s usage pattern and establish the optimal
Reconditioning/Calibration interval for that battery. IMPRES uses
an adaptive algorithm, which relies on several factors to evaluate
the need for Reconditioning/Calibration. The system then
automatically Reconditions/Calibrates the battery as required. The
intelligence within the IMPRES system automates the process,
removing guesswork from determining the optimal Reconditioning/
Calibration interval.
With this unique patented system approach, there is no need to
conduct or schedule manual Reconditioning/Calibration cycles.
IMPRES Chargers monitor the usage pattern of the IMPRES
battery, store that information in the IMPRES battery, and perform a
Reconditioning/Calibration cycle only when needed.

The IMPRES
Adaptive Dual-Unit Charger with Display provides the
user with valuable information while performing battery maintenance
and care. The information that the charger displays and the
corresponding LED indicators are detailed in the following tables.
Display Text Orientation
The IMPRES Adaptive Dual-Unit Charger is equipped with the ability to
“flip” the display text 180 degrees. To “flip” the display text orientation,
change the position of the Display Switch (located on the bottom of the
charger).
